Alinaghi Aalikhani Ph.D. علینقی عالیخانی was born on January 21st, 1929 in Chamseh, a small town near Abhar, Iran. Aalikhani is an Iranian politician and the head of the University of Tehran. As Iranian Minister of Economy, Aalikhani was one of the architects of Iran / Persia's economic development as part of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi's reform program, known as the White Revolution.
Aalikhani enrolled in the Faculty of Law after completing school in 1946 at the University of Tehran and completed his studies after three years. He went to Paris to do his doctorate in economics at the University of Paris. In 1957 he returned to Iran and began his career as an economic policy analyst with the newly founded intelligent service SAVAK.
In 1961, Aalikhani was appointed to the Iranian Oil Company by Amir Abbas Hoveyda, but after only a few months, Prime Minister Asadollah Alam appointed him as Minister of Economy. Aalikhani remained under Prime Minister Hassan Ali Mansur and Prime Minister Hoveyda for a total of seven years as the Minister of Economy.
In the further economic development, Aalikhani sought to revive economic relations with the Soviet Union in order to counterbalance a possible dependence on supplies from the western industrialized countries. In this way he was able to obtain a steel plant from the Soviet Union in exchange for natural gas. This is where the United States refused to deliver a similar steel plant to Iran.
In 1972 Dr. Aalikhani resigned from the head of the University of Tehran and went into the private sector and he finally left Iran in 1979.
