Jalaal al-Din Muhammad Roumi (جلالالدین محمد رومی), is also
known as Jalaal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi, Mawlana (مولانا, our master), Mawlawi (مولوی,
my master), and Rumi was born on September 30th, 1207 and passed on December
17th, 1273. He was a
13th-century Persian poet, Islamic scholar, and Sufi mystic originally from
Greater Khorasan.
Rumi's work does not belong to a specific region as it goes
across various borders and ethnic divisions: Iranians, Tajiks, Turks, Greeks,
Pashtuns, all Persian speaking nations, and other Central Asian Muslims have
greatly appreciated his spiritual legacy for the past seven centuries. His poems have been widely translated into
many of the world's languages. Rumi has been described as the "most
popular poet" and the "best selling poet" in the United States.
Rumi's works are written mostly in Persian, but occasionally
he also used Turkish, Arabic, and Greek in his verse.
